St. John's Hall Photos

This series groups together 10 group photos of the members of St. John's Hall. They are the only photographic records of St. John's Hall in the College Archives' collections.

St. John's Hall Group Photo, c.1915-1925

A group photo of the members of St. John's Hall probably taken between 1915 and 1925, judging by the fact that the Hall's second Warden the Reverend C. B. Shann (tenure: 1915-1931) was present in the group (seated, left 8), and that the building "Fairlea" (demolished by 1925) is shown on the left. This photo was taken on the terrace at the back of the East Wing of St. John's Hall. Behind the parapet wall on which the residents in the last row stood would have been a flight of steps leading down to Pokfulam Road on the right.

St. John's Hall Group Photo, 1930

A group photo of the members of St. John's Hall in 1930. Among those seated were the Warden the Reverend C. B. Shann (left 9), his wife Mrs Shann (left 8), and the Subwarden the Reverend N. V. Halward (left 7).

St. John's Hall Group Photo with Dr Foo Ping Sheung, c.1931

A group photo of the members of St. John's Hall and Dr Foo Ping Sheung (seated, left 6), probably taken on 12 January 1931 on the occasion of HKU's award of the honorary Doctor of Laws degree to Foo. Seated next to Dr Foo were the Warden the Reverend C. B. Shann (left 7), Mrs Shann (left 8) and the Subwarden the Reverend N. V. Halward (left 5).

St. John's Hall Group Photo, c.1940

A group photo of the members of St. John's Hall in circa 1940. Among those seated were the Warden Mr (later the Reverend) George She (left 5) and Dr Souza (right 4). Three residents have been identified: Huang Hsing Tsung (seated, right 2), Rayson Huang (2nd standing, right 1), Clifford Matthews (3rd standing, right 1).

St. John's Hall Orchestra Group Photo, 1940

A group photo of the members of St. John's Hall's orchestra in 1940. Seated in the centre was the Warden Mr (later the Reverend) George She. Rayson Huang, holding his violin, sat in the first seat from the right in the first row.

Annual Photos

Photographs in this series were grouped together and affixed to a scrapbook in the 1990s. They are mainly group photos, including a group photo of the members of St. Stephen's Hall in 1951, which is the only photographic record of St. Stephen's Hall in the College Archives' collections.

College in the Foundational Years

Photographs in this series were grouped together in a folder marked "Erik Kvan" on the cover. The folder appears to have been created in the 1960s. There are photographs of the Marden Wing probably taken in 1955 when the construction was completed, as well as photographs of three important events held in the foundational years of the College: the opening ceremony held on 14 October 1955, the Archbishop of Canterbury's visit to the College on 3 April 1959, and the College's golden jubilee ball held on 26 May 1962.
